What you will learn with film 8

Monday - back to school on Monday morning

At the weekend, our family went shopping in Koblenz and had an ice-cream by the statue.

Wednesday - we have an English lesson...

in English, we sing a song about going to Chester Zoo, with actions for all the animals.

You will learn the days of the week in German, and see the pattern of the German children's weekly routine: different things they do at school each day, and some things they do ate weekend. Of course, the lesson plan will be different in other schools.

What do you do at morning break?

You will see German childen bring sandwiches and snacks to eat in the classroom. They also play in the playgound.

One class swapped pictures of what they did with a primary school in Germany. They wrote short note in their own language about each picture.

Origins of day names

Both the German and English calendars have taken the idea of a week of 7 days from the Romans, along with most of the names.

The Romans followed Egyptian and Hebrew practice in calling the days after the sun, moon and the five planets then known - which they named after Roman gods.

The Anglo-Saxons (who came from Germany and Scandinavia, and settled much of England) re-named four of the days after their own equivalent Norse gods.

Five of the seven day names in English have the same Anglo-Saxon origins as the German names:
English
Origins
German
Monday
named after the moon
Montag
Tuesday
named after Tiu, the Norse god of war
Dienstag
Wednesday
named after Woden, the chief Norse god
Mittwoch
Thursday
named after Thor, Norse god of thunder
Donnerstag
Friday
named after Freya or Frigg, the Norse god of love
Freitag
Saturday
named after planet and Roman god, Saturn
Samstag
Sunday
named after the sun
Sontag

Dienstag means "work day";
Mittwoch means "middle of the week".
