Pope Benedict XVI

Another famous German is the head of the Roman Catholic Church: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected Pope in 2005. He took the name 'Benedict XVI (the 16th)'.

Born in 1925 in southern Germany, his training to be a priest was interupted by being called up as a young man to fight in the closing years of the Second World War - first manning anti-aircarft guns, then training to be an infantry soldier.

After the war, he became a priest in Germany, becoming Archbishop of Munich in 1977.
